TAT continues promoting tourism in secondary provinces

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has pledged to continue rolling out measures to boost tourism in secondary provinces.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said tourist numbers at secondary destinations have been rising steadily since the agency launched several of its ‘secondary tourist province’ campaigns.

During the first five months of 2018, the combined number of tourists visiting secondary destinations was recorded at more than 15 million people, which was 13.4% higher than the in same period last year. The revenue generated increased 20% year-on-year, according to the governor.

He expects secondary destinations to earn no less than 3 trillion baht in tourism revenue this year.

Despite the fact that Thailand is entering the monsoon season, the tourism industry is still bustling as tourists, both Thais and foreigners, have become more interested in cultural and community tourism which enables them to learn about the way of life of local communities as well as traditional practices that have been passed down through generations.

The TAT is collaborating with the Community Development Department of the Interior Ministry, to strengthen communities through OTOP products or locally-made goods such as traditional handicrafts, cotton and silk garments, pottery, fashion accessories, household items, and food.

It's hoped the move will generate income for the local population and improve their living standards.
