Taiwanese tourist saved after suffering three cardiac arrests in 30 minutes
VOV.VN - A 61-year-old male tourist from Taiwan (China), who suffered an acute myocardial infarction and three consecutive cardiac arrests within a 30-minute window, has been successfully resuscitated and treated by cardiologists at Bai Chay Hospital in Quang Ninh City.
According to Bai Chay Hospital, the patient, with a medical history of hypertension, was admitted experiencing severe left-sided chest pain radiating to the left shoulder, shortness of breath, a sharp drop in blood pressure, and critical cardiogenic shock.
Just 23 minutes after admission, the patient suddenly lost consciousness and suffered cardiac arrest. Over the course of 30 minutes, he experienced three consecutive cardiac arrests. Physicians immediately deployed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), external chest compression, defibrillation, endotracheal intubation, and intensive care measures.
Clinical examinations confirmed acute myocardial infarction complicated by ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and cardiogenic shock. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) revealed a thrombus causing a near-total occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery, a critical vessel supplying blood to the majority of the anterior heart wall.
Master of Science and Doctor Dinh Danh Trinh, Head of the Cardiology Department, along with his team, performed a thrombectomy, deployed a drug-eluting stent, and used high-pressure balloon angioplasty to restore blood flow to the myocardium.
Dr. Trinh stated that following the intervention, the patient's vital signs stabilized and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for continued treatment. The patient required no further advanced interventions such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and has passed the critical stage.
Since the beginning of 2026, Bai Chay Hospital has successfully performed coronary interventions for five international tourists suffering from myocardial infarction.
Physicians advise that individuals experiencing symptoms such as chest tightness, pain radiating to the shoulder, arm, neck, or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweats, or dizziness should promptly seek medical facilities equipped with emergency care capabilities.
People with underlying cardiovascular conditions must properly control risk factors. Early detection and prompt treatment are important factors in reducing mortality from myocardial infarction.
