Taiwanese men arrested for defrauding

Hanoi police one July 3 temporarily detained two men from Chinese Taiwan for allegedly using the Internet and telecommunication networks to appropriate property.

On June 30, a team from the municipal crime prevention department caught Chang Khai Yeu, 27, and Hsieh Ming Hsin, 31, using cards of other people to withdraw money at an automated teller machine (ATM) in Nguyen Thi Dinh street, Cau Giay district.

After checking, the police discovered and seized 54 ATM cards issued by Vietnamese banks and nearly VND283 million.

Preliminary investigations showed that the men had shook hands with some Vietnamese to call targeted people for paying phone charges or pose as policemen to illegally get money from them.

They used software counterfeiting the police’s telephone number to defraud the victims. At least VND7 billion (US$330,000) have been reportedly stolen.

The case is under further investigation.
