Subsequent earthquakes strike Kon Tum again on Sept. 10

VOV.VN - Five earthquakes jolted Kon Plong district of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum on the morning of September 10 alone, according to the Vietnamese Institute of Geophysics.

Among them, the latest and strongest earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred at 11:35:25 (Hanoi time) at a depth of 10km, said the Institute of Geophysics.

Four other earthquakes measuring between 2.5 to 3.1 on the Richter scale struck the area in the morning, starting at 05:55 (Hanoi time).

Experts believe that earthquakes in Kon Tum are stimulated by the reservoir at Upper Kon Tum Hydro-Electric power Plant. When water penetrates deep into the ground, the soil and rock change state, triggering an earthquake to occur.

The magnitude of these earthquakes is weaker than that of natural earthquakes, normally less than 5 on the Richter scale.

The Institute of Geophysics reports that in just one year from April 2021 to April 2022, Kon Tum had recorded 169 earthquakes, 5 times the total number of earthquakes recorded over the previous 100 years in this area.
