Strong quake hits Indonesia, no tsunami warning issued

A powerful undersea quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern parts of Indonesia on September 16, but no tsunami warning was issued, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake struck at 14:40 local time with the epicenter at a depth of 53 kilometres.

It was initially determined to be at 1.8523 degrees north latitude and 126.38 degrees east longitude between the islands of Sulawesi and Halmahera.

Indonesia is prone to quake as it lies on a vulnerable quake-hit zone dubbed "the Pacific Ring of Fire".
