Steady progress in in vitro fertilization technology in Vietnam

VOV.VN - More than 16,300 babies have been born via the in vitro fertilization (IVF) service at Ho Chi Minh City-based Tu Du Obstetric Hospital since the first three cases were successfully conducted 25 years ago.

The figures were released at a get-together of doctors and nurses involved in IVF cases and children born via the IVF service at Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital on April 27.

“Tu Du is proud to be one of the leading medical facilities in Vietnam that help infertile women to have the opportunity to become mothers,” said Dr. Tran Ngoc Hai, deputy director of the hospital.

According to Hai, between 55,000 and 60,000 infertile couples come to the hospital for medical check-ups every year. The past 10 years has also seen more than 22,000 intrauterine insemination (IUI) cases and more than 23,000 IVF cases conducted at the hospital, with the success rate reaching over 45%.

“Thanks to the application of new techniques in infertility diagnosis and treatment, the treatment success rate at the hospital is as high as that of leading assisted reproductive centers around the world,” said Hai.

Prof. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, former director of Tu Du Obstetrics Hospital, who directly engaged in the first three IVF cases, said she was happy that Vietnam has so far established 40 – 50 assisted reproductive centres to support infertile women nationwide.

“There are even techniques we are better at than foreign colleagues, and that’s why many doctors and technicians abroad, not only in Southeast Asia but also in developed countries like Australia, Germany, France or the US come and learn about our experience,” she said.

Speaking at the gathering, Tang Chi Thuong, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, expressed his gratitude to doctors and nurses, and hoped the city’s leading hospitals would soon be in the top 100, 200 or 300 in the world in the near future.
