Sixth Kilo-Class Submarine arrives at Cam Ranh port

VOV.VN - Heavy-lift vessel RollDock Storm carrying the sixth Kilo-Class Submarine named HQ-187 Ba Ria-Vung Tau entered Cam Ranh Port in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on January 20.

RollDock Storm will anchor at Cam Ranh port for three days before HQ-187 Ba Ria-Vung Tau is sent to the Vietnam People’s Navy.

Having a displacement of 3,000-3,950 tonnes, the 73.8m long submarine can operate at a maximum depth of 300 metres and at a range of 6,000-7,500 nautical miles for 45 days and nights with 52 crew members.

With their super-low noise level, the submarine is called ‘black holes in the ocean’.

The submarine was launched on September 28, 2015 at the St. Petersburg-based Admiralty Shipyard, and began its trial run on December 19. It started the voyage to Vietnam on November 24, 2016.

This is the sixth and last diesel-powered 636 Kilo-class submarine that Vietnam purchased from Russia to modernise and enhance the capacity of its navy forces to defend the country's territorial waters.

The Vietnam People’s Navy has already received five submarines: HQ-182 Hanoi, HQ 183 Ho Chi Minh, and HQ-184 Hai Phong in 2013 and 2014, HQ-185 Khanh Hoa in 2015 and HQ-186 Da Nang in 2016.
