Sinkhole divides highway in central Vietnam
Traffic on National Highway 16 in Lang Chanh district of the central province of Thanh Hoa has been interrupted because of the appearance of a sinkhole of 12 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 10 meters deep.
According to locals, a small sinkhole appeared in late August. The sinkhole gradually expanded to the current size due to prolonged rain.
The local authorities are trying to deal with this serious landslide to resume traffic on the highway. They buried bamboo stakes around the sinkhole to prevent it from getting wider. Only bicycles and motorcycles can pass through the road thanks to a temporary path near the sinkhole. The Thanh Hoa Department of Transportation has approved a VND1.3 billion (US$65,000) plan to solve the incident, which is expected to be completely fixed this week.
Highway 16 was opened for traffic in 2013.
