Singapore ministry confirms 41 Zika cases

The Ministry of Health (MOH) of Singapore has confirmed 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika, all of whom were residents or workers in the Aljunied Crescent and Sims Drive area.

The Straits Times and Channel News Asia have quoted the MOH for their coverage that 36 foreign construction workers are among the infected.

These cases are out of 124 people, including 118 construction workers, most of whom have been tested on August 27, the MOH and the National Environment Agency said in a joint press conference on August 28.

None of the cases are known to have travelled to Zika-affected areas recently, suggesting local transmission.

These cases are being localised within the Aljunied Crescent and Sims Drive cluster, said the MOH.

On August 27, more than 200 officers were activated to conduct intensified control operations.

In this May, Singapore announced the first Zika case, a 48-year-old man who had visited Brazil, one of the Zika-affected countries.
