Senior Vietnam Buddhist Sangha leader passes away in HCM City

VOV.VN - Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh, Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha’s Patronage Council passed away on the morning of October 8, 2025, at Vinh Nghiem pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City, at the age of 94.

According to the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), the funeral will be held at 4:00 p.m. on October 8 at Vinh Nghiem pagoda, where the Most Venerable’s body is being placed in a coffin for VBS members and lay devotees to pay their final respects. The memorial ceremony will be conducted at 5:00 a.m. on October 12, followed by the entombment ceremony at Linh Phong Thien Uyen pagoda in Vung Tau ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

Most Venerable Thich Tri Tinh entered monastic life at Trung Hau pagoda, Hanoi, at the age of 15. He was a revered elder monk, contemporaneous with the late Third Supreme Patriarch Thich Pho Tue (1917–2021).

At the 8th National Congress of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in 2017, he was elevated to the position of Deputy Supreme Patriarch of the Patronage Council and had served in this capacity until his passing.

The Most Venerable was the founder of Linh Phong Thien Uyen pagoda in the former Ba Ria–Vung Tau province, now part of Ho Chi Minh City. In recent years, due to his old age, he had been respectfully invited by the VBS to reside at Vinh Nghiem pagoda, where he received care and medical support until his final days.
