Seminar acquires feedback on 2019 population, housing census
A seminar to acquire feedback on the 2019 population and housing census, the fifth of its kind, took place in Hanoi on September 7.
The outcomes of the census is also meant to appraise the fulfillment of the United Nations’ Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, build a database on population statistics in line with the Law on Statistics, and supplement the national, ministry and industry database for further study, analysis and forecast of population growth and housing development nationwide and in each locality, thus serving e-government building at four levels.
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative in Vietnam Astrid Bant underscored the significance of the census, saying that it will help the Vietnamese government monitor achievements towards the UN Millennium Development Goals.
Vu Thi Xuan Mai, head of the GSO’s Population and Labour Statistics Department, said the census is conducted every 10 years, starting from April 1, in order to evaluate national targets and indicators of sustainable development. The object of the investigation is all Vietnamese people with permanent residences.
Estimated contents collected in the census will include statistical data on housing and living conditions of households. Statistical data are integrated to meet the requirements of compiling several statistical indicators which will reflect emerging or important issues in population field.
The basis for data collection in the 2019 census includes the national statistical indicator system enacted by the 2015 Law on Statistics, the statistical indicator system at the provincial, district and communal levels, sets of indicators on national development, youngsters, the Law on Vietnamese Children, and on socio-economic status of 53 ethnic minority groups across Vietnam.
Sharing local experiences from the 2009 census, Deputy Director of the Yen Bai provincial Statistics Office Lam Le Bang stressed the need to rally the involvement of agencies, sectors and socio-political organisations in the effort.
Vietnam’s population is estimated at more than 95.38 million people throughout over 25.93 million households by 2019.
The census will be carried out in 173,000 locations, requiring over 200,000 investigators and inspectors.
