Rare 70-kg sea turtle released back into the sea in Ca Mau
VOV.VN - Border guards in the southernmost province of Ca Mau, in coordination with local police, released a rare 70-kilogram sea turtle back into its natural marine environment on September 29.
The sea turtle was accidentally caught in fishing nets late in the evening of September 28 by Pham Viet Khai, a fisherman residing in Tan An commune. Recognizing the animal's protected status, Khai temporarily cared for it before notifying the Tam Giang Tay Border Guard Station.
Following a brief health evaluation and supportive care provided by border guards and local police, the marine animal was safely returned to the sea on the morning of September 29.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Minh Nhong, head of the border station, noted that sea turtles are endangered species vital to marine ecosystems. He praised the fisherman's voluntary handover, emphasizing that such community actions reflect growing public awareness of wildlife protection, biodiversity conservation, and the preservation of marine resources.
Border guards and local police highlighted that cooperation between fishermen and law enforcement shows ongoing efforts to protect endangered marine species and promote sustainable practices across coastal communities.
