Ransomware attack partially interrupts Vietnam Post operations

VOV.VN - Hackers carried out a ransomware attack on the information technology system of the Vietnam Post Corporation (Vietnam Post) on June 4 morning, causing disruption to the firm’s operations.

The attack is directly impacting activities related to postal delivery services, while postal finance, public administration and goods distribution services are still operating normally, said Vietnam Post.

As soon as the attack was detected, Vietnam Post activated its action scenario, including disconnecting its information technology system to isolate the problem and protect data. Indeed, all websites that contain “vnpost.vn” in the domain name and related applications were temporarily interrupted.

Vietnam Post is collaborating with authorities and partners to handle and fix problems as soon as possible, ensuring customer benefits.

Since the beginning of 2024, there have been a series of ransomware attacks on Vietnamese businesses operating in the fields of securities, energy, telecommunications, and health care such as VNDirect Securities, PetroVietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL), IPA Securities Investment Fund Management Limited Company (IPAAM), IPA Investment Group (IPA), and Homefood Foodstuff Joint Stock Company.

The Authority of Information Safety under the Ministry of Information and Communications recently warned about the increase of cyberattacks in Vietnam, especially ransomware in which cybercriminals seize and encrypt data, then ask for ransom payment.

Statistics show that there are more than 2,330 attacks on the information systems in Vietnam in the first quarter of this year, causing system disruption and serious damages while affecting national cyber space security.

Authorities recommended that agencies and businesses strengthen network security monitoring to promptly detect cyberattack activities, stressing enhancing network security is key to defending them against such attacks.
