More than 1,000 veterans, relatives of martyrs, Buddhist monks and followers, and local residents gathered together in Quang Tri town to offer incense and flowers and to pray for the souls of the martyrs.
Tens of thousands of soldiers laid down their lives in a fierce battle against the United States at the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel over the course of 81 days and nights in the summer of 1972.
The central province was heavily devastated by more than 328,000 tonnes of bombs and shells which were dropped throughout the battle.
The event also saw participants observe a minute of silence in commemoration of the Vietnamese Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong who passed away in Hanoi on July 19.
Vietnam is set to observe a period of national mourning for the Party General Secretary on July 25 and July 26.
