Quang Ninh: First-instance trial begins for Chinese nationals with fake ATM cards
The People’s Court of the northern province of Quang Ninh on October 22 began the first-instance trial for four Chinese nationals under the charge of “using a computer network, telecommunications network, or electronic device to appropriate property”.
The four defendants, Zheng Ren Xien, Feng Yu He, Wang Tao, and Li Dan Yang, were arrested in February for using fake cards to withdraw money from local ATM booths.
The provincial People’s Court decided to hand out prison sentences to the defendants. Zheng and Wang each got four years and six months in prison, while Feng was sentenced to five years and six months of imprisonment, and Li five years in jail.
According to the verdict from the local people’s procuracy, Zheng was caught red-handed by the provincial police while withdrawing cash with counterfeit cards at an ATM in Hong Gai ward, Ha Long city on February 22. As many as 29 bank cards, CNY323 (US$46.5), and more than VND57 million (US$2,400) were seized.
Later that day, local police in collaboration with the border guards at Mong Cai International Border Gate arrested Zheng’s three accomplices who were attempting to leave for China via the border gate.
