Police investigate group assault on foreign tourist on backpacker street

VOV.VN - The Ho Chi Minh City Police on May 18 launched an investigation into a group assault on a foreign tourist on Bui Vien Walking Street, a popular nightlife backpacker area in district 1.

A video clip surfacing social media shows three young men repeatedly kicking and punching a shirtless foreign man. Despite the victim’s attempts to defend himself and gesture for the attackers to stop, the youngsters continued the assault.

One of the assailants even ran up holding a beer bottle and struck the foreign man with great force. The blow did not hit the victim’s head but landed on his back. The beer bottle then fell to the ground and shattered.

The incident occurred in front of a bar in a crowded public area, but no bystanders intervened.

After the video spread online, local police brought the individuals involved in for questioning and statements. Preliminary findings suggest the altercation stemmed from a drinking-related conflict.

The case is currently under further investigation and will be handled in accordance with Vietnamese law.
