PM requests mask use amid coronavirus threats

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked localities and people to stay highly vigilant and strictly follow the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 recommendations, including donning face masks, amid coronavirus threats in the community.

It’s hard to implement the ongoing dual goal of epidemic prevention and economic recovery if another coronavirus outbreak occurs, Chinh told a meeting in Hanoi on April 26, pointing to the fact the COVID-19 pandemic is evolving in a complicated manner in the world, especially in neighbouring countries.

According to the Government leader, Vietnam is currently facing a potential risk of a resurgence of a new coronavirus outbreak in the community. There is a complacent attitude among the general public after the pandemic has been brought under control in the country without new cases detected over the past few weeks.

The PM therefore asked ministries, agencies, localities, business organisations, and people to put anti-coronavirus measures in place, including strictly implementing the Ministry of Health’s 5K message, namely Khau trang (facemask), Khu khuan (disinfection), Khoang cach (distance), Khong tu tap (No gathering) and Khai bao y te (health declaration).

The PM especially reminded the Ministry of Defence and southwestern border provinces to strengthen patrols to prevent acts of illegal entry via land and sea borders. Any violations must be dully punished according to the law, said the PM.

He also requested the Ministry of Health to speed up negotiations with foreign manufacturers to access new vaccine courses while facilitating the research and manufacturing of local vaccines.

The southwestern region that borders Cambodia and Thailand is currently a hotspot for a possible coronavirus outbreak in the community as an increasing number of people is seeking to illegally cross the border into the country.

Many of the returnees have been confirmed as infection cases carrying either variant B1.1.7 of the UK or variant B.1.352 of South Africa, both of which are more transmissible than the predecessor lineage.

The Ministry of Health has said it is working with relevant agencies to develop scenarios in which a a new coronavirus outbreak is likely to occur in the community in the coming time.
