PM requests investigation into pomu forest destruction in Quang Nam

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has requested an investigation into the destruction of a pomu forest in military sub-zone 351 within Nam Song Bung protected forest in the central province of Quang Nam. 

The Ministry of Public Security was assigned to coordinate with the Ministry of National Defence and authorities of central Quang Nam province to investigate and deal with the issue. 

The press coverage reported that on July 9, a local in La Dee commune discovered 280 logs of pomu wood (28 cu.m) hidden nearly 500m from a border guard station belonging to Dac Oc border gate. This area is about 100m from Laos. 

On July 16, Nam Giang district’s police uncovered 115 logs of pomu wood (8.2 cu.m) hidden in the premise of Nam Giang border gate’s customs agency. Their origins remain unknown. 

In the evening of the same day, the police seized 25 pomu blocks (nearly 1.2 cu.m) in a local home near the area. 

In the afternoon of July 17, a further 85 pomu blocks were found in bushes about 50m from a customs station and 500m from a border guard station of Dac Oc border gate. 

Later on July 19, Director General of the Vietnam Customs asked the head of Quang Nam provincial customs department to suspend head of Nam Giang border gate’s customs agency Le Trung Thinh. 

Nguyen Hoang, head of the customs control team will take the helm of the agency until the case is made clear.
