PM requests effective measures to cope with flooding, landslides

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has dispatched a telegram, asking relevant agencies and localities to adopt necessary measures to cushion the impact of the ongoing spell of heavy rain and flooding in northern and central regions in the wake of the recent tropical depression.

A tropical depression hit central Vietnam on September 26, bringing heavy rain to the region, stretching from Thanh Hoa to Quang Binh.

Heavy downpour caused water levels in major rivers in the region to swell up, flooding parts of many localities. Rising floodwaters forced residents in low-lying areas to move to a higher ground for safety reasons.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds also triggered landslides at some sections of national highways passing through central localities, disrupting traffic.

Torrential rain also lashed northern localities from Yen Bai to Hanoi, submerging localities in low-lying areas

It is anticipated that heavy rain will probably fall in the coming days, posing a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas, flash floods, and landslides in mountainous areas.

To ensure people’s safety and minimize damage to property, the PM asked relevant agencies and localities to pool resources to deal with the consequences of the natural disasters.

Among the immediate measures, he ordered prompt evacuation of residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, a sufficient supply of daily necessities to needy residents, and reinforcement of key construction works.

He also asked the designated agencies and localities to put rescue forces on standby for deployment in case of emergency.

The telegram was addressed to the National Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and National Committee for Disaster Incident Response and Search and Rescue, Government ministers, heads of ministerial-level agencies, and heads of provincial administrations of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Ninh Binh, Hoa Binh, Son La, Lao Cai, and Yen Bai.
