PM Chinh launches organ and tissue donation campaign

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 19 launched a campaign calling for organ and tissue donation to save people's lives, with the participation of leaders and former leaders from the Ministry of Health, alongside representatives from ministries, agencies and localities.

The campaign was held at the Vietnam-Germany Hospital in Hanoi by the Ministry of Health, the Vietnam Red Cross Society and the Organ and Tissue Donation Association.

During the past three decades, the organ transplantation service had made remarkable progress thanks to incentive policies of the Party and State, efforts by medical staff, public support and, in particular, the noble sacrifices of organ donors.

Since the first kidney transplant in 1992, the country has conducted 8,607 organ transplants, mostly kidney transplant with 7,914 cases, and liver transplant with 593 cases.

In his address at the event, the Vietnamese Government leader emphasized that donating organs and tissues is one of the most meaningful presents one can give to others. Thousands of people in Vietnam have received successful organ transplants and their lives have been saved because of the generosity and sharing of good-hearted people.

The Party and State always pay special attention to health care, especially emerging fields using modern technology such as organ donation and transplantation and had put in many mechanisms, policies and laws to support this work.

“This is a bright spot, a source of pride, a testament to outstanding progress, demonstrating the level of expertise, deep technical expertise and diverse experience of organ transplant specialists, Vietnamese organ transplant industry in the country's healthcare sector,” PM Chinh said.

He suggested May 19 – President Ho Chi MInh's birthday- should be a day of gratitude for organ and tissue donors.

At the launch ceremony, PM Chinh and leaders of the Government’s agencies were among those who registered as organ and tissue donors, adding a total of more than 3,800 people to the organ donor data bank.

The cabinet leader congratulated and applauded the leaders of the Ministry of Health as well as Vietnamese healthcare workers, particularly the professors, physicians, officials and medical staff working in the field of organ transplantation, who show a strong sense of responsibility and are ceaselessly pursuing new research to reach the goal of "curing diseases and saving people."

He urged ministries, sectors and localities to step up their work in information technology, to make it quicker and easier for people to register for tissue and organ donation so that everyone who is eligible can be listed.

PM said he believes that with the obtained important achievements along with deep awareness, compassion, and sharing of the entire society, organ transplantation and the tissue and organ donation system in Vietnam will increasingly develop in order to build trust with and bring hope to patients.
