Phu Quoc International Airport opens second runway to prepare for APEC 2027
VOV.VN - Phu Quoc International Airport officially put its second runway into operation on October 29 after eight months of construction, enhancing its capacity to handle wide-body aircraft ahead of APEC 2027.
At 7:05 a.m., Sun PhuQuoc Airways flight 9G1955 landed as the first commercial flight on the new runway. Measuring 3,300 meters long and 45 meters wide, the new runway meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Code E standards and is equipped with an ILS/DME precision landing system and CAT II lighting, allowing it to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A350, Boeing 777, and Code F aircraft.
Following the launch of the second runway, the airport will temporarily close its existing first runway for upgrades to extend its length from 3,000 meters to 3,500 meters and expand its total width to 75 meters, enabling it to handle Code F wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 747-8F and Airbus A380-800.
During the six-month upgrade, all flight operations will shift to the second runway to ensure seamless scheduling for the 2026/2027 winter season. The first runway is scheduled to resume operations in May 2027.
Once both runways operate concurrently alongside the upcoming T2 passenger terminal, the airport will increase peak-hour capacity and maintain operations during maintenance or contingencies. The upgraded first runway will also facilitate long-haul wide-body flights connecting to Europe, the Middle East, and Northeast Asia.
The T2 passenger terminal, designed by CPG Consultants (Singapore), is being rushed to completion to open in May 2027. Under a strategic partnership agreement signed on March 21, 2026, Changi Airports International (CAI) will participate in managing and operating the airport, optimizing operational efficiency and developing international air connectivity and non-aviation services to international standards.
In its first phase, Phu QuocInternational Airport targets a capacity of 24 million passengers annually, with a long-term expansion potential of up to 50 million. In 2027, the airport expects to handle approximately 13.5 million passengers, over half of whom will be international visitors.
