Pfizer, Vietnam expand cooperation on vaccines, medicines, technology

VOV.VN - Pfizer is seeking to expand cooperation with Vietnam in disease prevention, vaccines, innovative medicines and technology transfer, while supporting healthcare system capacity and efforts to address antimicrobial resistance.

Sinan Atlig, Pfizer’s Emerging Market Chief Commercial Officer and LATAM Cluster President, was speaking at a meeting with Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Lien Huong in Hanoi on September 16.

Atlig said Pfizer wishes to discuss several key areas of cooperation, including disease prevention, vaccines, innovative medicines, healthcare financing and antimicrobial resistance. The company also proposed expanding vaccine technology transfer and strengthening healthcare system capacity.

According to the Pfizer representative, these areas share the common goal of improving public health care, building on the results of cooperation between Pfizer and Vietnam’s Ministry of Health in recent years.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Lien Huong spoke highly of Pfizer’s interest in and commitment to supporting Vietnam’s health sector, saying the areas proposed by the company are aligned with several of Vietnam’s priorities for 2026-2030.

On disease prevention, immunisation and vaccines, she stressed that Vietnam will continue to strengthen its Expanded Programme on Immunisation, explore broader life-course immunisation, gradually introduce new-generation vaccines, and step up research, technology transfer and domestic vaccine production.

Regarding innovative medicines, the Ministry of Health is interested in improving access to advanced treatments, particularly for cancer, rare diseases and other conditions with a high disease burden. At the same time, it aims to ensure safety, efficacy, quality and the sustainability of the health insurance system.

“The Ministry of Health is ready to discuss appropriate solutions with Pfizer, in compliance with the law and ensuring the effective use of healthcare resources,” she told her guest.

On antimicrobial resistance, she said, the ministry will keep focusing on antimicrobial resistance surveillance, antibiotic stewardship, infection prevention and control, and strengthening laboratory capacity under a One Health approach.

The Deputy Minister also called on Pfizer to share international experience and solutions suited to Vietnam’s conditions.

The two sides agreed to continue discussions on specific areas of cooperation for 2026-2030.

The Ministry of Health asked relevant professional units to work with Pfizer to fully assess the scientific basis, legal framework, feasibility and resources before proposing implementation, particularly for areas involving technology transfer, healthcare financing, health insurance, pricing and mechanisms for access to medicines.
