VOV.VN - The General Department of Vietnam Customs seized over more than a tonne of narcotics and detained 148 people in 140 related cases over the first six months of the year.

From May 16 to June 15 alone, customs officers in collaboration with competent agencies confiscated over 400 grams of drugs, 66.8 kg of cannabis, 14.7 kg of heroin, 306.2 kg of cocaine,  4,052 ecstasy pills, 172.8 kg of synthetic drugs, and 990 pills of other narcotic substances.

In the first six months of the year, the general department detected 140 drug trafficking cases and arrested 148 criminals, marking a decrease of 7.3% in terms of the number of cases but an increase of 0.7% in the number of accomplices compared to the same period from 2022.

According to the customs officers, the criminals used sophisticated tricks to cover up their affairs. In addition, the amount of drugs seized via air routes was also increasingly lately, with the majority transported from Europe.

The leaders of such drug trafficking rings are primarily Vietnamese individuals residing, studying, or working abroad, who then collaborate with partners in the country in an attempt to smuggle drugs into Vietnam. They usually contact each other via mobile apps such as WhatsApp and Instagram using fake accounts.
