Over 600 kg of ivory smuggled from Africa destroyed in Hai Phong
VOV.VN - Authorities in Hai Phong city have destroyed 159 pieces of elephant tusks weighing a total of 615 kilograms, which were illegally smuggled from Africa,
The destruction was carried out at the Waste Treatment Plant of Hoa Binh High-Tech Environment Company under the close supervision of representatives from the Civil Judgment Enforcement Department, the People’s Procuracy, local police, and the city’s Departments of Agriculture and Environment, along with other relevant agencies.
According to the case file, in February 2023, the Hai Phong customs and police forces jointly inspected two suspicious import containers and discovered 615 kg of elephant tusks concealed among African buffalo horns.
The shipment, imported by HMD Engineering JSC and its legal representative Hoang Van Hao.
In July 2024, Hao was sentenced to 10 years in prison which was later reduced to eight and a half years on appeal.
The destruction of the seized elephant tusks demonstrates the strong commitment of Vietnamese authorities to combating and preventing the illegal trade and transportation of wildlife products.
It also reflects Vietnam’s efforts to fulfill its international commitments to biodiversity conservation and the protection of endangered, precious, and rare species.
