Over 300 tourists stranded on Co To island due to storm
VOV.VN -Co To island has seen 307 tourists become stranded as ships were requested to pause operation on August 1 by authorities in the northern province of Quang Ninh.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Storm Wipha, the third tropical depression striking Vietnam this year, reached the northern waters of the Gulf of Tonkin on the morning of August 2. Winds at the centre of the storm have reached between 9-12 level on the Beaufort scale.
Localities in northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, has also experienced a deluge of heavy rain in recent days due to the impact of the storm.
Evacuation plans have also been implemented in affected provinces and coastal cities. Soldiers and local authorities have evacuated over 71,635 boats containing 284,989 people, 757 cruise ships, 218 merchant ships containing 981 people, and three foreign boats with 662 people onboard.
Between 7 pm of July 31 and 7 am of August 1, the storm brought between 30-50mm of rainfall to Hoa Binh, Lang Son, Ha Nam, and Bac Ninh.
Heavy rains are due to hit northern and north-central provinces from August 2-4.
