Online passport applications cut time spent in line

The online passport application system has made administrative procedures simpler and reduced waiting times and overcrowding at government offices, according to the HCM City Public Security Department’s Immigration Management Office.

The time taken for issuance has shrunk to eight days from 15, according to Colonel Nguyen Van Anh, head of the office.

After completing the form online, applicants have to go to the office to have their photos taken and attached electronically to the forms.

They can choose to have their passport sent to their home or office address and will be told when they can get it.

"People can also apply at the office, where nearly 30 computers have been set up for them. Officials are always around to assist," he said.

On May 4 Pham Thi Thao Phuong, a resident of District 3, went to the office and applied for a passport.

Thao said she was happy with the simple procedures and quick service.

Online applications account for more than 80% of around 1,100 applications submitted every day.

The applications can be made at http://xnc.catphcm.bocongan.gov.vn.

The traditional hand-filled applications will continue for children aged under 14 and the elderly.

The online system was inaugurated in 2014 in Hanoi and introduced in HCM City last year.
