One killed, nearly 7,000 houses damaged as thunderstorms hit northern Vietnam

VOV.VN -Significant damage has been reported throughout several northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam following recent spells of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

A local was killed and eight others were injured after thunderstorms struck the northern mountainous provinces of Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Phu Tho, and Quang Ninh.

A total of 6,891 houses and 53 schools were unroofed and 1,556 hectares of subsidiary crops were submerged. In addition, eight cattle and 2,500 poultry heads died due to the thunderstorms.

Moreover, the roofs were blown off of approximately 26 office buildings, 11 workshops, seven local cultural houses, and 109 barns. Elsewhere, 809 civil projects and a huge number of trees were also damaged.

Local authorities of the thunderstorms hit provinces have promptly addressed the aftermath of the storms to bring normalcy back to local people’s daily lives.

Most notably, four Vietnamese fishermen have gone missing after a fishing vessel capsized during the height of the thunderstorms in the waters of Quang Ninh province on April 21. Rescue forces are currently fanning out to look for the victims.

According to meteorologists, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to engulf northern regions over the coming days with rainfalls of between 15 mm and 30 mm, or even larger in some areas.
