North Vietnam to endure prolonged severe cold snaps as La Nina comes late
VOV.VN - The delayed arrival of La Nina is expected to cause several bouts of severe cold spells in Northern Vietnam in the coming months, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Meteorologists affirmed that La Nina, the cool phase of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle has arrived, and despite its late arrival, it will still have noticeable impacts in the Asia-Pacific region, including Vietnam, especially during the winter.
Temperatures in the northern region of Vietnam are forecast to be lower than the average of previous years, with more frequent severe cold snaps to last until February.
La Nina will heighten the likelihood of frost, ice, and other extreme weather phenomena in mountainous areas. In addition, wetter conditions are anticipated, with periods of drizzle and heavy rains.
Meanwhile, central localities may experience spells of cold rain due to cold air interactions with the region’s terrain, while the Central Highlands and southern regions are expected to remain dry and warm.
Meteorologists warned that people should prepare warm clothing and thermal gear, especially for the elderly and children. They should ensure home heating systems are safe to use, avoiding risks of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning.
The agriculture sector was required to take proactive measures to protect crops and livestock from the cold, and to enhance safeguards for winter-spring rice.
According to meteorologists, the phenomenon is likely to last until February before getting weak in March.
