North–South railway artery reopens after rockfall disruption at Hai Van Pass

VOV.VN - The North–South railway line through the Hai Van Pass, the only railway artery connecting northern and southern Vietnam, has resumed operations after a two-day suspension caused by a rockfall that damaged the track.

According to the Railway Safety Management Division II under the Vietnam Railway Authority, train services began running through the affected section at 5:30 p.m. on March 16 after repair work was completed.

The first train to safely pass through the area was freight train HH16, which travelled through the Hai Van Nam – Hai Van section at Section Km768+875, the exact location where the rockfall had occurred.

Freight trains are currently being prioritised, while passenger services are scheduled to resume normal operations through the Lang Co – Kim Lien section starting at midnight on March 17.

Railway authorities also installed two surveillance cameras in the area to monitor the site and promptly detect and handle any potential incidents, ensuring safety for train operations.

Earlier on March 14, a large rock rolled onto the North–South railway line at the Hai Van Pass in Hai Van ward of Da Nang. The rockfall occurred at Section Km768+875, bending and breaking the track. A freight train coded AH1derailed after reaching the site.

Although the initial damage was repaired, another rock later rolled down into the same area that evening.

To ensure safety, railway authorities suspended all train services through the Hai Van Pass and arranged shuttle transfers for passengers between Da Nang and Lang Co in Hue and vice versa.

The disruption led to the cancellation of 12 passenger trains, while more than 5,600 passengers on 31 trains had to be transferred during the past few days.

Loal authorities are currently investigating the rockfall incident at the Hai Van Pass.
