Nine Vietnamese ranked among world’s top 10,000 most influential scientists

VOV.VN - Vietnam has nine scientists ranked among the world’s top 10,000 and about 70 scientists listed in the top 100,000 most cited researchers globally in 2025, according to a list recently released by academic publishing company Elsevier.

The list, compiled by a group of researchers led by John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, makes use of citations from Scopus, an international scientific database, to name 100,000 most-cited scientists based on in its database till the end of 2024.

The list of nine Vietnamese scientists in the global top 10,000 remains almost unchanged compared to 2024, though many have achieved significant improvements in their rankings.

Leading the Vietnamese cohort is Assoc. Prof. Hoang Anh Tuan from Dong Nai University of Technology, who is ranked 438th globally, a notable jump from 706th last year.

He was followed by Prof. Dr. Vo Xuan Vinh from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (2,327th), Dr. Tran Nguyen Hai and Dr. Hoang Duc Nhat, both from Duy Tan University (2,905th and 3,635th), Dr. Pham Thai Binh from University of Transport and Communications (3,773rd), Dr. Nguyen Phuc Canh from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (4,727th), Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach from Hanoi Medical University (5,085th), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc from Vietnam National University, Hanoi (5,750th), and Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (9,612th).

This year, Prof. Nguyen Xuan Hung entered the top 10,000, replacing Assoc. Prof. Le Hoang Son (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), who dropped to rank 10,694, making him the highest-ranked Vietnamese researcher in the broader top 100,000 group.

Elsevier reported that the publicly available database of top-cited scientists provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score).

Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields according to the standard Science-Metrix classification. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field. This version is based on the August 1, 2025 snapshot from Scopus, updated to end of citation year 2024.

The presence of nine Vietnamese scientists in the top 10,000 highlights the country’s growing global research impact, with more studies being widely cited internationally.
