New Year’s: One of the deadliest days on the road
(VOV) - New Year's Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the year and it's also one of the most dangerous nights for drivers, passengers and pedestrians to be on or near the roadways, say traffic safety officials.
According to officials at the national committee for traffic safety, this year’s January 1st holiday claimed the lives of 22 people while another 25 were seriously injured in a total of 38 reported vehicular accidents.
According to the officials, New Year's Eve festivities most often include alcohol and if partygoers ring in the New Year with a drink or two, they should do it responsibly and not operate any motorized vehicle.
“We’re not just talking about people driving while drunk but also people who are under the influence of substances like heroine or prescription pulls,” they explained. “These are threats to the safety of everyone, especially on a special night like New Year’s Eve.”
Meanwhile, traffic police handled out nearly 9,056 traffic tickets for violations, collecting total administrative fines of more than US$222,350 (VND5 billion) and seized 85 cars and 1,006 motorbikes.
