New classroom opened for OVs in Cambodia

VOV.VN - A new classroom for overseas Vietnamese children in Pursat, Cambodia was inaugurated on July 9 with the attendance of Vietnamese Embassy representatives and the Khmer-Vietnamese Association Executive Board in Pursat, and a large number of OVs, teachers and pupils.

The project is funded by the Vietnamese Embassy with the support of associations, sectors and OVs in Cambodia.

At the inauguration ceremony, Ngo Van Ly, head of the Khmer-Vietnamese Association in Koh Kek hamlet, said OVs in the remote fishing village on Tonle Sap Lake are touched by the care and attention shown by the Vietnamese Party and Government.

The classroom is an important foundation, helping Vietnamese children to preserve their national culture, and learn about the culture of their country of residence for their better integration into society, Mr Ly added.

Pursat is one of the provinces in northeastern Cambodia with the highest number of OVs, having nearly 1,900 households with 7,000 residents. Koh Kek hamlet alone has 289 households.

OVs in Pursat, particularly Koh Kek hamlet, are poor and mainly subsist on fishing in Tonle Sap Lake. Their economic conditions are totally dependent on such natural resources.
