Netflix removes TV shows ahead of official operation in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Netflix, a streaming service for entertainment, has removed many TV shows in the Vietnamese territory from its platform before it officially operates in the country due on December 23, 2024.
This is part of Netflix’s commitment to complying with the regulations and requirements set by the Vietnamese government regarding content and intellectual property rights.
Under Vietnamese law, Netflix is only allowed to offer films that have been classified and approved by the relevant authorities for the film industry.
However, the Department of Broadcasting, Television, and Electronic Information of Vietnam earlier found the platform had offered several programs classified as television shows, including reality TV shows about sports, food, travel, relationships, and weddings.
Among the shows were “Love on the Spectrum”, “Down for Love”, “Love on the Spectrum Australia”, and “Longest Third Date”. These programs are not classified as movies and do not fall within the category allowed for Netflix’s operations in Vietnam.
The department requested that Netflix remove all television shows from its platform in Vietnam, and after working sessions with authorities of Vietnam the platform has done so and committed to only distributing films that have been classified and approved according to Vietnam’s film law.
Relevant authorities say they will continue to monitor the activities of companies offering online film services to ensure that the market operates fairly and that businesses comply with a unified legal framework.
