Nearly 100 kilogrammes of ivory seized at Hanoi airport

Customs officers at Noi Bai International Airport and anti-smuggling forces on April 22 examined two packages and seized 105 pieces of elephant ivory, weighing nearly 100 kilogrammes.

According to the customs officers, the packages, which were shipped to Hanoi International Airport by Turkish Airlines on flight TK 6562, were intercepted by the customs authority on April 6.

Sample of the confiscated items was sent to the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology on April 22 to identify the types of elephant tusk.

The case is currently under investigation.

Vietnam has banned the trade in elephant tusks since 1992.

On Janurary 30, police and customs officers uncovered six suitcases containing approximately 180 kilogrammes of alleged elephant tusks at Noi Bai International Airport. The items were carried by three people from Angola to Vietnam.
