Navy studies U-Tapao airport expansion for EEC

The Royal Thai Navy is proceeding with the feasibility study for the expansion of U-Tapao airport on 6,500 rail land to support the Eastern Economic Corridor's (EEC) development, potentially raising the country's industrial and economic capabilities.

U-Tapao Airport's director Rear Admiral Worapon Tongpreecha said the Cabinet had approved the 760 million baht budget for the expansion of U-Tapao International Airport, a budget which the Royal Thai Navy will use to pursue the project in order to support the development of the Eastern Economic Corridor, which covers the provinces of Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao.

The airport development plan includes the construction and development of facilities on 6,500 rai of land expected to be finished in 2021.

The expanded airport will have a two-runway system to accommodate more flights, along with its own hangars and cargo warehouses, training center, and areas co-invested by the private sector.

Information and security facilities in the airport will be upgraded to comply with the ICAO's standards.

U-Tapao airport currently serves 12-15 daily flights, including charter flights from European countries during the travel season. So far this year, the airport has received 720,000 passengers.
