More men fall victim to domestic violence in Vietnam

VOV.VN - The number of men suffering domestic violence in Vietnam is increasing, said Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung.

In a report to the ongoing seventh session of the National Assembly, Dung revealed that nearly 3,200 domestic violence cases were recorded nationwide in 2023 compared to more than 4,000 cases in the previous year.

Of the total, physical abuse topped the list with 1,520 cases, followed by emotional abuse with 1,400 cases, economic abuse with 230 cases and sexual abuse with 110 cases.

Compared to 2022, the number of cases and victims of domestic violence both decreased, but the proportion of male victims to female victims showed signs of increasing, said the Minister.

He cited statistics saying of the nearly 3,200 victims of domestic violence, there were 2,600 women and 565 men.

Nearly 3,000 people who committed domestic violence offences were provided with consultations, faced criticism and were given administrative fines, while 129 people were criminally prosecuted.

Many people who experience violence do not report the case to authorities due to fear of discrimination, and they think it is a normal occurrence.

Most victims only report and seek support from authorities when the incident is serious and lasts for a long time, or it can lead to the end of the marriage.

This makes it difficult to deploy solutions to intervene and respond to violence, the minister admitted.
