Mobile carrier allows users to access Facebook at no data cost
Vietnamese mobile carrier Mobifone announced on May 26 it has cooperated with the world’s largest social network to launch Facebook Flex, a service allowing its subscribers to use Facebook without any data charges.
The Facebook available for the “free mode” access, however, is a light version, which displays no photo and other media content but still allows users to check their newsfeed, posting statuses and comments, and chatting via Facebook Messenger.
The service is intended to help more people have access to the social network now used by more than 1.9 billion.
Mobifone users can now open Facebook using the Internet browser on their mobile devices with 3G on, and log in their Facebook account.
Upon login, users will see a purple message, telling them that they are using Facebook at the “data mode” and providing an option to switch to “free mode”.
The Facebook Flex version is quite similar to the mobile version of Facebook. While all photos are not displayed, the user profile pictures are maintained, apparently allowing users to recognize their friends.
Users can choose “use data” at any time if they really want to see the photo.
