Man arrested for organising illegal stay of foreign nationals in Vietnam
VOV.VN - A man in southern Vietnam has been arrested for allegedly harbouring and employing 18 foreign nationals who had overstayed their visas and were working illegally, police in southern Tay Ninh province said on May 29.
Investigators have launched criminal proceedings and detained Nguyen Minh Hung, 60, a resident of Ho Chi Minh City, on charges of organising illegal stay for foreigners in Vietnam.
The case was uncovered after local police in Duc Lap commune detected a group of foreign nationals suspected of residing illegally while working at Thien Minh Trading – Manufacturing – Import Export Co., Ltd.
Inspections found that 18 Bangladeshi nationals were staying in Vietnam without valid visas. Their temporary residence permits had expired and had not been renewed.
Preliminary investigations showed that in January 2025, Hung, acting on behalf of Thien Minh Company, signed a contract to purchase finished wood products from a company in Dong Nai province.
In December 2025, after some products were found defective, the partner company sent several workers, including six Bangladeshi nationals, to Thien Minh Company for repair work.
According to investigators, the workers later asked Hung for permission to remain at the company and continue working there.
Police said Hung agreed because labour costs for the foreign workers were lower than those for Vietnamese employees and the company did not have to provide benefits such as health insurance or hazardous-duty allowances.
Investigators alleged that Hung was fully aware the workers had overstayed their visas and were ineligible for temporary residence registration, work permits or formal labour contracts.
The 18 Bangladeshi nationals have been handed over to relevant authorities for administrative procedures and deportation in accordance with Vietnamese law.
