Malaysia ratifies int’l convention on minimum wage

Malaysia has become the first country in ASEAN and the fifth in Asia to ratify the Minimum Wage Fixing Convention or Convention 131.

Minister for Human Resources Richard Riot Jaem said Malaysia deposited the document of ratification to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the 105th International Labour Conference, which is taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to the Malaysian Government, from July 1, the country’s minimum wage will increase from 900 MYR (around US$225) to 1,000 MYR (US$250) for workers in the peninsular area and from 800 MYR (US$200) to 920 MYR (US$230) for those in Sabah Sarawak, and Labuan states.
