Low-carbon rice farming models to be expanded

Authorities of southern An Giang province plan to expand low-carbon rice farming models in the locality and its vicinities in the Mekong Delta region.

The Vietnam Low-Carbon Rice Project (VLCRP) has been carried out in Phu Tan district on an area of 1,350ha since December 2012, heard a workshop in An Giang on October 9.

Participants said the project helped improve locals’ income and protect the environment by reducing over 7 tonnes of CO2 emissions per hectare per year.

It also proved itself feasible for commercial rice production in large-scale fields, according to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Doan Ngoc Pha.

The VLCRP is funded by the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
