Localities respond to Earth Hour 2026 with energy-saving activities

VOV.VN - Localities across Vietnam have launched activities in response to Earth Hour 2026 under the theme “Green Innovation-Green Future”, aimed at raising public awareness and promoting energy saving and efficient use.

In Hanoi, the municipal People’s Committee on March 28 launched numerous activities in response to Earth Hour, combined with a summer peak campaign on energy saving and efficiency. The event was organised with the participation of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, the Authority for Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the National Innovation Centre under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and related agencies.

The programme included experiential activities such as models applying renewable energy in urban areas and households, as well as electricity-generating cycling. The lights-off activity from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. was highlighted not only as a symbolic action but also as a call for changes in production, consumption and energy management.

The city called on sectors, businesses and residents to strengthen energy-saving practices, apply technological solutions, and adjust production and consumption methods, contributing to more efficient energy use and improved socio-economic performance.

According to Nguyen Dinh Thang, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, 2026 is expected to see prolonged heat, impacts on hydropower sources and global energy supply pressures. Efficient electricity use and smart energy use are therefore important solutions in the current period and the upcoming summer peak months, contributing to Hanoi’s target of saving 1.6-1.8% of energy compared with projected demand.

In the southern province of Vinh Long, the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC), in coordination with Vinh Long Power Company, organised a run in response to the programme on energy saving and efficient use and Earth Hour 2026 at An Hoi Park. The event attracted more than 800 participants over a 3km distance.

On the same day, tree-planting activities and awareness programmes on energy saving and efficient use were held at Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School, Phu Tan ward, as part of the youth project “Green Energy – Lighting Dreams for Schools”, helping raise students’ awareness of environmental protection and energy saving.

On this occasion, Vinh Long Power Company presented 1,000 notebooks to students, supporting their studies and encouraging participation in environmental protection activities.

In Tuyen Quang northern Vietnam, the provincial Department of Industry and Trade organised a cycling launch event at March 26 Square, Ha Giang 1 ward, in response to Earth Hour 2026. The activity highlighted the role of innovation in the green transition, from production to consumption and daily life.
