The coach blast that killed eight people and injured three in Laos on June 2 might have been triggered by fireworks stored on the coach, according to the Vietnam’s Consulate General in Laos’ South-Central region.
The reason has been concluded by Lao and Vietnamese authorities as the initial cause of the blast, said Tran Cong Thinh, Vietnamese Consul General.
According to the source of information from the consulate general, four Vietnamese nationals were detained, including driver Nguyen Duc Tu, two driver assistants and one passenger, who is supposed to be released soon.
On June 2, the coach carrying the Lao number plate UN 3897 of Nghe An-based Khanh Don coaches was carrying 14 people, 12 of them being passengers, was heading for Vietnam. When it reached Nongbua hamlet in the Langkhang economic zone in the province of Khammunane, eight kilometres from Cha Lo border gate (Vietnam’s Quang Binh province), the coach suddenly exploded and was engulfed in flames, immediately killing eight people and injuring three.
All eight dead victims were identified and their corpses were brought home. The three injured are being treated in Vietnam.
An investigation is being carried out by local authorities to confirm the cause of the explosion.
