Lai Chau records first outbreak of African swine fever

VOV.VN - The first signs of an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) have been discovered in Then Sin commune, Tam Duong district, in the northern province of Lai Chau, according to the provincial department of animal health.

A local resident in the commune reported that six pigs on his farm had been found dead on March 18.

After receiving reports of the incident, the relevant units within Lai Chau province took samples from the pig farm for testing with the results of four samples coming back positive for the ASF virus.

The relevant agencies in Lai Chau, working in co-ordination with local authorities, were able to cull the infected pigs.

In addition, they also managed to isolate any contaminated zones and set up a quarantine station to strictly monitor the transportation of pigs and pork products.

Tran Van Sung, deputy chairman of Tam Duong district’s People’s Committee, said the region is home to some 40,000 pigs.

Immediately after the first outbreak of ASF was detected, the district worked alongside relevant units to cull the infected pig flock.

The district has released information regarding the ASF outbreak to other communes in the region to raise awareness among local residents about the epidemic, noted Mr Sung.
