Historic floods highlight rescue teams’ heroism, expose misinformation campaigns

VOV.VN - As historic floods devastate central Vietnam, rescue teams, including police officers, soldiers and militias, have risked their lives to save residents and deliver critical relief, false narratives and manipulated reports circulate online, seeking to undermine public trust.

In recent days, central localities including Khanh Hoa, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Hue, and Quang Tri have been hard hit by historic floods, causing severe losses of life and property. Amid the natural disaster, images of police officers and other forces working tirelessly to evacuate and assist residents have become a vivid testament to the strong bond between the military, police, and the people.

Yet, on social media, reactionary and opportunistic forces have sought to exploit the situation by spreading distorted narratives. They deliberately misrepresent facts, claiming that authorities “neglect” citizens and accusing police officers of “performing” rescues for publicity, aiming to sow doubt and weaken public trust. Some even use AI technology to manipulate videos and images, spreading false reports of collapsed buildings and mass casualties, creating fear and confusion among the public.

These tactics, though familiar, are highly dangerous. They target public sentiment, exploiting the grief and stress caused by floods to undermine the credibility of the armed forces and government, and to cast doubt on the leadership of the Party and State. Articles with headlines such as “Why is the disaster response apparatus still unprepared?” and “Officials only perform for show” aim to inflame emotions rather than present the facts.

The reality, however, tells a different story. Police officers and rescue personnel have risked their lives to save the elderly, children, and vulnerable residents. Several police officers were injured while rescuing residents from flooded areas, yet continued their life-saving efforts, demonstrating selfless dedication to the people. In addition to frontline rescues, teams organised the delivery of thousands of relief packages to support affected communities. These acts clearly reflect the dedication and professionalism of the police in safeguarding residents.

Misinformation, such as claims of mass deaths or abandoned residents, cannot erase these facts. The Dak Lak Provincial Police have publicly refuted false reports and pledged to investigate and strictly punish individuals spreading malicious rumors.

Vietnamese traditions of solidarity and humanity are vividly displayed in these disasters. The muddy hands, heavy shoulders carrying sandbags, and exhausted yet resolute faces of police officers serve as a reliable support for flood-affected communities. Their actions stand as undeniable evidence against misinformation and affirm the core role of the police in disaster response, rescue, and relief operations.

As attempts to exploit floods for political purposes continue, people must remain vigilant, refrain from sharing unverified information, and resist manipulation by reactionary forces. Especially in the lead-up to the 14th Party Congress, staying informed through credible sources is crucial.

The courage and humanitarian dedication of rescue teams during these floods send a powerful message that no matter how severe the disaster, people are not alone. Through responsibility, selflessness, and courage, the rescue teams strengthen public trust, reinforce military-civilian unity, and decisively counter all attempts at disinformation.
