Heavy rain, landslide death toll rises to 72, 30 still missing

Some 72 people have been killed as of 21:00 on October 15 in widespread floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the central region and northern mountainous provinces.

The disasters occurred after a tropical depression hit central Vietnam last week, according to the latest report by the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. 

Another 30 people were still missing while 33 were injured.

The northern province of Hoa Binh remained the hardest hit, where floods claimed the lives of 23 people and left 10 others missing. The victims included 18 people in four families buried in a devastating landslide in Khanh village, Phu Cuong commune, Tan Lac district in early morning of October 12.

By the afternoon of October 15, 13 bodies have been recovered while search continued for five others.

The deaths also included 16 people in Thanh Hoa, 15 in Yen Bai, nine in Nghe An, six in Son La, two in Hanoi and one in Quang Tri.

Trung Chinh commune of Nong Cong district and part of Yen Giang commune of Yen Dinh district in northern Thanh Hoa province are still cut off by the flooding.-
