Heavy rain floods Saigon airport; numerous flights canceled

The torrential rain on August 26 evening inundated Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, affecting many flights from and to the southern metropolis.

The downpour of 159 millimeters caused dozens of flights to be delayed and cancelled and totally submerged the airport’s aprons in rainwater.
The flooded runways prevented planes from either landing in or taking off.
Many flights to Tan Son Nhat Airport had their routes adjusted to other airports due to the inundation.
National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines spokesperson said that nine flights to Tan Son Nhat were rescheduled to touch down at other airports while those planned to depart from the Ho Chi Minh City airdrome were forced to delay or cancel due to the bad weather.
Low-budget carrier Vietjet had ten flights from Tan Son Nhat delayed and three flights to the airport switched to touch down at Cam Ranh International Airport in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa.
Those affected flights of the two carriers could only start leaving for Tan Son Nhat at 10:00 pm, when the downpour ended in Ho Chi Minh City.
