Heavy rain and landslides leave four dead and three injured in Lai Chau

VOV.VN - Prolonged heavy rain in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau over the past few days has triggered landslides in Than Uyen district, killing four locals and injuring three others.

Local authorities reported that rescue forces have so far recovered three dead bodies, and were fanning out to look for the last one.

Meanwhile, heavy downpour had also left eight people stranded between two landslides in the border area between Muong Kim and Ho Bon communes. Currently, all the stranded people have been safely moved to Ho Bon commune of neighbouring Yen Bai province.

Flooding has so far caused great damage to houses and other properties of people in Muong Cang, Khoen On, Muong Kim, Ta Hua and Ta Mung communes. Landslides have buried more than 140 hectares of rice fields, vegetables, and fish ponds. Total damage is estimated at over VND8 billion.

Landslides and flashfloods have disrupted traffic on national highways and inter-village roads, washed away makeshift bridges, and damaged ditches, gabion embankments and irrigation canals, with damage estimated at more than VND30 billion.

Authorities said they have deployed forces to landslide areas to assist local administrations with rescue work and at the same time move local residents in flood-prone areas to a higher ground.
