Healthcare cooperation a bright spot in Vietnam-Germany relations

VOV.VN - A delegation from Military Hospital 175 under Vietnam’s Ministry of National Defence paid a working visit to the German city of Leipzig and St. Georg Hospital on May 19 to review cooperation outcomes and discuss directions for expanding specialized cooperation in the coming period.

The Vietnamese delegation included Major General Dr. Tran Quoc Viet, Director of Military Hospital 175; Major General Prof. Nguyen Truong Giang, Director General of the Military Medical Department; and Colonel Nguyen Tuan Minh, head of the Defense Attaché Office in Germany.

The German side included Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung, Deputy Mayor Clemens Schülke, and representatives of hospitals, medical facilities and businesses operating in medical technology and equipment.

In a cordial and open atmosphere, both sides reviewed more than a decade of cooperation between Military Hospital 175 and partners in Leipzig. The partnership has been described as a bright spot in healthcare cooperation between Vietnam and Germany, as well as between Ho Chi Minh City and its sister city Leipzig.

Tran Quoc Viet, Director of Military Hospital 175 said the most significant achievement over the past decade has been building a medical workforce with increasingly high professional qualifications. With sincere and practical support from Leipzig authorities, many doctors, nurses and technicians from Military Hospital 175 have had opportunities to study and improve their professional expertise at partner hospitals in Germany. Experts from Leipzig have also regularly traveled to Vietnam to conduct specialized training directly for Vietnamese medical personnel.

On the basis of that close cooperation, the German side has successfully transferred a number of advanced medical techniques that have been effectively applied by the hospital in treatment and rehabilitation. These include cardiovascular rehabilitation, movement therapy, and orthopedic rehabilitation following hip and knee replacement surgery.

For his part, Burkhard Jung noted that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the Vietnam-Germany Strategic Partnership (2011-2026). He welcomed the remarkable progress in bilateral ties, which has helped strengthen cooperation in economics, research and science.

The Leipzig mayor said the two cities still have ample room for further breakthroughs in cooperation, particularly in physiotherapy, rehabilitation and orthopedics, where modern technologies could be applied to develop practical assistive devices directly benefiting patients.

Under Vietnam’s master plan for the healthcare network through 2030, with a vision to 2045, Military Hospital 175 has been designated as one of six national key hospitals prioritized for modern and internationally standardized development.

Major General Prof. Nguyen Truong Giang said 175 Military Hospital and partners in Leipzig are focusing on training high-quality medical personnel, strengthening management capacity, expanding specialized healthcare services and promoting scientific research. The efforts are expected to help build a modern medical institution meeting regional and international standards in line with the government’s objectives for the hospital.

During the visit to Leipzig, the delegation from Military Hospital 175 also held technical discussions with the leadership of St. Georg Hospital, one of the hospital’s partners in Leipzig. The two sides discussed key directions for future cooperation, including expanding advanced medical technology transfers and developing direct specialty-to-specialty cooperation models.

The two sides also stressed that building a highly qualified workforce trained to international standards is a key factor in improving service quality and treatment effectiveness for patients.

Notably, over the past three years, St. Georg Hospital has received and facilitated training for 13 trainees from Military Hospital 175 in Germany. The trainees were given access to a modern medical environment, participated directly in clinical and professional procedures and successfully completed their training programs.

On this occasion, the leadership of St. Georg Hospital awarded training completion certificates to two trainees from Military Hospital 175. This was seen as concrete evidence of the increasingly substantive cooperation between the two leading medical institutions in Ho Chi Minh City and Leipzig, in line with practical needs.
