HCM City to work on Metro Line 2 by year end
VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City has planned to break ground on Metro Line 2 from Ben Thanh market to Tham Luong Depo by the end of this year, following the recent inauguration of Metro Line 1, to expand the city's metro network .

The project is part of a 10-year plan to develop 355 km of metro lines announced recently by the municipal administration, aiming to enhance the city’s sustainable urban transportation system.
According to the plan, an engineering design - Front-End Engineering Design - and a feasibility study report will be completed by June 2025. The pre-feasibility study report will be appraised in August 2025 and submitted to the municipal administration for approval in the following month.
Contractor selection is scheduled for October 2025, before the official groundbreaking in December 2025.
Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) submitted a proposal to the municipal administration to invite representatives from relevant ministries and agencies to participate in the appraisal team for selecting foreign consulting contractors and Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors for Metro Line 2.
Under the National Assembly’s Resolution 188 on special development mechanisms for Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City is permitted to directly appoint contractors for consulting, non-consulting services, and EPC contracts.
Consulting package preparations, appraisals, and evaluations are expected to begin in late March 2025. Consultant selection and mobilization will take place in May, with project adjustment approval expected by early Q4, followed by the EPC contractor selection process.
According to MAUR, investment preparation procedures will be completed by the end of the year. The metro route is expected to be completed by October 2030, with commercial operation shortly afterwards.
Approved in 2010, Metro Line 2 initially had a total investment of US$1.3 billion. The 11 km route has been designed to pass through six districts, namely District 1, District 3, District 10, District 12, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu.
By 2019, the total investment was adjusted to over US$2 billion, with the majority in ODA loans from the Asian Development Bank, Germany’s KfW Development Bank, and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Ho Chi Minh City held an inauguration ceremony for Metro Line 1 from Ben Thanh Market Station to Suoi Tien Theme Park on March 9, marking a significant milestone in the city’s urban transportation system.
Metro Line 1 spans a total length of 19.7 km, connecting the downtown area in District 1 to eastern areas such as Binh Thanh District and Thu Duc City. The line consists of 2.6 km of underground tracks and 17.1 km of elevated tracks, featuring 3 underground and 11 elevated stations.
