HCM City seeks gov’t support to implement three key projects

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has suggested the Ministry of Planning and Investment propose the Prime Minister approve the allocation of VND17.2 trillion (US$754 million) to carry out three key projects.

They are Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai Expressway project, and renovation projects on Xuyen Tam Canal and Hy Vong Canal.

The city authorities have pledged to speed up legal procedures to soon implement the projects and put them into operation as well as promote its effectiveness.

According to the municipal People’s Committee, the total investment capital for the 50-km length Ho Chi Minh City-Moc Bai Expressway is VND15.9 trillion under the build-operate-transfer (BOT) form. The city proposed allocating VND5.9 trillion for site clearance and compensation.

The expressway will help improve the traffic system in the southern key economic zone, easing traffic on National Highway 22. It connects the economic centres, the border gate economic zone, the urban areas of the southern key economic region with the hubs of seaports and international airports of the region and the ASEAN region.

The clean-up project on Xuyen Tam Canal, at the section of Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal to Vam Thuat River, stretches nearly nine kilometres. It aims at relocating houses along the canal, preventing pollution and make the city more beautiful. The city suggested VND9.3 trillion in assistance.

It also proposed supporting the entire VND1.9 trillion for the Hy Vong Canal Renovation Project which deal with problems relating to the drainage of rainwater and flooding at Tan Son Nhat International Airport area and the surrounding area.

The city has been prioritising the use of budget capital to ensure funding for COVID-19 prevention and control, so it faces many difficulties in allocating capital for public investment projects, according to the municipal People’s Committee.

The above-mentioned three projects are identified as urgent ones in the field of transport and urban infrastructure that need to be given priority for investment in the 2021-2025 period as part of its effort to improve the people’s quality of life and create breakthroughs in socio-economic development, it said.
